Lvl 118: Practice Does NOT Make Perfect

from The ProcrastiN8r Podcast

Practice seems like such a waste of time. I mean, I ain't about to get off the couch if I ain't ever gonna reach the level of perfection I'm expected to reach. Neither are you? Yeah! Tell 'em! But what if we remove perfection from the equation? What if we aim to be just good enough? What if instead of trying not to fuck up at all, we try to fuck up a bit less than last time? Practice doesn't make perfect, but it does make IMPROVEMENT! The ProcrastiN8r way to practice is to just try to get a wee bit better. And do it with focus. You don't need to pick up n' play your instrument for hours a day or start to dribble around the basketball court at the ass crack of dawn. Practicing a few minutes with focus on getting better. They say repetition is the key to practice. Sure, but it's better to repeat practice with total concentration & focus a few minutes every day than it is to repeat a sort of off-hand, do it just to do it sort of practice for long periods of time. Face it, in the age of social media, where a distraction is just a reach in our pocket away, our attention span (collectively) has plummeted. There's no way you can tell me you'd be able to sincerely focus on one thing for 15 minutes yet alone several hours. Make what you can with that short amount of time. Practice, even if you have to half-ass it and barely put any time into it. Half-Ass things? C'mon Nate! You literally talked about that last week. Sure did! I'm glad you noticed. Now you're seeing how it's all related. Now you're embracing the Lazy Mindset. Once you start to connect the dots like that, these kinds of thoughts come natural. Stop when you make a mistake and really hone in on it. Don't "practice through" a mistake. Take the time to actually improve, rather than ignore the mistake. Oh and like a sloth, practice SLOW. No really. Act like your in a slow-mo film. Feel every little muscle move, every joint twitch. The slower, the better. Of course, make sure you take a break from practicing once in a while and ya know, procrastinate it 'til later.
