On April 10, 2016, while Robert (Father Rene) was attempting to assist him, Murray instructed him to enter the trunk of his vehicle.During the court proceedings, Murray's lawyer, Adam Levin, highlighted how those who should have protected him failed him from an early age. Levin explained that Murray had developmental delays and was intellectually challenged with an IQ of 68 at the age of six. Murray sought medical attention in an emergency room not long before he killed Robert, trying to cope with the demons of his past. Murray is accused of murdering the Reverend Rene Robert, a 71-year-old from St. Augustine who he met through a girlfriend. According to previous reports, Robert lent Murray his vehicle on April 10, and later agreed to go for a ride with him.While driving Robert's car, Murray was spotted in Aiken near Snipes Pond and Wire Roads, but he crashed the vehicle in an attempt to evade the authorities. Robert was dedicated to helping individuals like Murray, who were on the outskirts of society and frequently imprisoned. Additionally, Robert was a fervent supporter of the abolition of the death penalty. In 1995, he signed a Declaration of Life, stating that if he were ever killed, his murderer should not face capital punishment. Their paths crossed during a difficult time in Murray's life when many had given up on him, and he was spiraling out of control. On April 10, 2016, while Robert was attempting to assist him, Murray instructed him to enter the trunk of his vehicle. Murray subsequently drove Robert to the Georgia woods after traveling for long periods through South Carolina and Georgia to visit family.Murray shot Robert in the left side, and when he fell to the ground, Murray fired the gun into his head. The following day, Murray fled from the authorities in a high-speed chase.
