Made in His Image
from South Shore Community Church · host Jonathan Fleming
The opening chapter of Genesis reveals a revolutionary truth about human value that stands in stark contrast to how the world typically measures worth. While society determines value through usefulness, monetary worth, desirability, and scarcity - all systems that constantly shift based on human opinion and demand - God operates from an entirely different framework. When God created humanity, He declared creation not just good, but very good, because humans were made in His image.Being made in God's image, or imago Dei, means we possess intrinsic value that doesn't depend on our performance, achievements, or circumstances. This applies to every person regardless of race, background, or belief. However, sin has affected our understanding of this truth, which is why we often struggle with feelings of inadequacy despite our best efforts. This is where Jesus comes in - He bridges the gap between our fallen state and our intended purpose, redirecting our entire value system back to God.The problem with secular approaches to self-worth is that they either make everything equally valuable (rendering nothing uniquely valuable) or tie worth to performance and achievement. Both center value on self-acknowledgment, but since we are broken, any self-centered value system will ultimately fail. The biblical message is clear: we are valuable because of who made us. Our worth comes from God, not from self-acknowledgment or human achievement. The key to understanding our worth is worship - acknowledging God's infinite value as the foundation for recognizing the value He has placed in us. When we ground our identity in being God's masterpiece rather than in our accomplishments, we discover the unchanging truth of our worth.
