Made in His Image: Understanding Your Divine Purpose

from Welcome to the 411 · host Raymond Brown, Clarence Matthews, North Clinton Ave Church of Christ

Send us Fan MailWho am I? This seemingly simple question strikes at the very core of human existence. While adolescents wrestle with identity as they separate from parents, adults face their own identity crises through career changes, health challenges, loss, and mortality. Our meditation explores this universal human question through the powerful lens of Genesis 1:27.The biblical understanding of identity begins with the revolutionary concept that we are made in God's image. Unlike Eastern religions that seek dissolution of self or Greek philosophies that consider matter evil, Scripture presents a life-affirming view of creation where humans stand as the crown of God's handiwork. Being created in the divine likeness means we possess freedom of moral choice—a profound gift that carries equally weighty responsibility. We cannot blame our choices on fate, ancestry, or external forces. This divine imprint also bestows inherent dignity that should neither be inflated through pride nor diminished through self-degradation.Our identity isn't found in isolation but in relationship. We are social beings reflecting a relational Creator. As Augustine recognized, "Our souls are restless till they rest in thee." This restlessness—perhaps explaining much of society's spiritual malaise—finds resolution when we understand not just who we are but whose we are. We belong to God; He has prior claim on our lives. Through Christ, this identity finds its fullest expression as we're united with Him through faith and baptism, receiving His Spirit within us. Understanding your true identity as God's image-bearer transforms everything about how you see yourself and live your purpose. What would change if you truly embraced who—and whose—you are today?
