Magnificat

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Around the table, we discuss our favorite Christmas songs and the original Christmas carol. Mary's Magnificat is on another level of greatness. It's holy. Saturated in scripture, overflowing with joy...before Mary's life was turned upside down she got to celebrate her divine pregnancy with her older cousin Elizabeth. I love thinking about these women huddled together in isolation for three months. Can you imagine the coversations they must've had?  Luke 1:46-55 Compare to 1 Samuel 2:1-10 Old Testament verses referenced in Mary's song  Psalm 34:2-3, 138:6, 71:19, 111:9, 103:17, 98:1, 107:9, 98:3, 132:11 Exodus 20:6, Isaiah 40:10, Genesis 17:9 I recommend reading Hannah's song in 1 Samuel 2:1-10 side by side Mary's song to really appreciate the similarites. Also look up the OT references that Mary puts in her song. I encourage you to spend some time reading and reflecting on those during this Christmas week.  Do we know God's word well enough to compose our own praise song?
