Mahidol University hosted 20th TICF

The 20th Thailand International Composition Festival (TICF), held from 13 to 16 August 2025 at Mahidol University, reaffirmed its reputation as one of Asia’s most vibrant new-music gatherings. With more than 30 composers from across Asia, North America and beyond, the festival offered a panorama of voices that spanned traditional idioms, avant-garde experimentation, and AI-assisted creation.Demographically, the festival leaned strongly towards male composers, though works by female voices such as Yuwen Su, Yishi Zhong, and Mijia Chen brought welcome diversity. Thai composers, led by Narong Prangcharoen—the festival’s founder and dean of the College of Music—dominated the programmes, but strong representation also came from China, particularly through Ye Xiaogang’s celebrated chamber works and the residency of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra’s “Stylish Pinxian” Ruan Soloists, who highlighted both tradition and crossover creativity.Other regional presences included Malaysia’s Yii Kah Hoe and Elson Kwong, while the international perspective was bolstered by American composer Sean Shepherd.Over four packed days, more than 40 works were performed, with ensembles ranging from the Mahidol Wind Orchestra to the Triphen Ensemble and culminating with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra under Wilson Ng. Highlights included world premieres such as Elson Kwong’s Drop, Surges and Alarms, and the fusion of AI and tradition in The Colour of Lotus, developed jointly by Tencent Music’s AI Lab and the SHCO.If there was a theme to emerge, it was the coexistence of heritage and innovation: Jiangnan traditional tunes sat comfortably alongside digital experimentation, and young Thai composers found themselves in dialogue with established Asian masters.
