Majapahit's Succession Crisis: The Rise of Suhita

After the Paregreg civil war ended in 1406, Majapahit entered a period of political instability. This episode explores the reign of Queen Suhita (r. 1429–1447), the daughter of Wikramawardhana, who ascended the throne amid factional rivalries and the growing influence of the pasisir lords. Drawing on the Pararaton and Chinese Ming dynasty records, we examine how Suhita navigated the aftermath of the war, including the execution of Bhre Wirabhumi and the exile of his followers. We discuss her efforts to consolidate power, the role of the Wali Songo in mediating between the kraton and coastal Muslim traders, and the gradual shift of economic power from Trowulan to the north coast. Suhita's reign also saw renewed diplomatic missions to Ming China, as recorded in the Ming Shilu.
