Make No Mistake
from St Mark Sermons Hosted by St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church
This evening's sermon, delivered on the Feast of Theophany (Epiphany), centers on the baptism of Christ as the revelation of the Holy Trinity. Fr Thomas calls this the "Feast of Lights," marking God's illumination of a world in darkness, and urges the congregation to move beyond festive celebration into personal reflection on the meaning of their own baptism. The sermon builds around three "make no mistake" statements. First, baptism is a spiritual birth in which the individual chooses what kind of being to become. Second, baptism demands real, ongoing change: if a baptized person's sinful patterns remain unchanged, the baptismal water is "merely water" and grace is absent; this continual transformation happens through daily repentance. Third, believers must "make it clear who their Father is" — since children bear their parents' traits, Christians should visibly reflect God's goodness, mercy, and love through their conduct, becoming a living epiphany to others. The message closes with a call to live out baptism daily: choosing a Christ-centered life, embracing necessary but difficult change, and letting one's life reveal God's character to the world.
