“Make Room for Him”
from "Prayer Changes Everything" Devotion for Today · host Y.E.S. Jesus Youth Encountering Savior Jesus
Sept. 11,2026 Daily Devotional: “Make Room for Him” John 14:23 Jesus answered him, 'If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.'" We often treat obedience as a rigid set of rules—a checklist to earn God's approval or avoid His disapproval. But in John 14:23, Jesus completely reframes obedience. It isn't atransactional duty; it's the natural language of love. Jesus says, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word..." Notice the sequence. Love comes first; alignment follows. When you deeply care for someone, you naturally treasure their words, respect their desires, and align your life with what matters to them. Keeping Christ’s word isn't a test to pass; it's the overflow of a heart captivated by Him. The promise attached to this love is staggering: "we will come to him and make our home with him." Earlier in John 14, Jesus speaks of preparing rooms for us in His Father's house. But here, He turns the tables. He asks to make a home insideus. God does not desire to be a brief guest who visits your life on Sunday morning, nor an occasional consultant you call during a crisis. He wants to move in. He wants to dwell in the mundane rooms of your daily routine—your conversations, your work, your thoughts, and your quiet moments. John 14:23 reveals the deep relationship between love, obedience, and divine presence. Rather than treatingobedience as a cold duty, Jesus presents it as the personal expression of love for Him—which in turn invites a permanent, intimate fellowship with God. Love comes first; keeping His word is the natural outcome. Biblical obedience is not a transactional attempt to earn God’s favor, but the grateful overflow of a heart that trusts Him. When you choose to align your choices, heart, and habits with His words, you are unbolting the door and clearing out the clutter. You create a warm, welcome space for the Father and the Son to abide with you. Examine your motivation, are there areas where you obey out of fear or guilt rather than love? Ask God to show you His heart so that your compliance transforms into affection. Tidythe guest room, is there a specific area of your life—a habit, a secret thought pattern, or an unyielding attitude—that feels out of alignment with Christ's word? Relinquish it today to make room for His presence. Practice His presence throughout your daily tasks, pause and remind yourself: God is not distant. He has made His home right here with me.
