Making Menopause Matter

from WomenKind Collective

As it was World Menopause Day on October 18th, we talk about how the generations of women before us had to suffer, the hideous medicines they were told to take and the Doctors believing that a clitoridectomy would solve the hysteria issues surrounding women of a certain age. One woman as we find out was not going to be silenced, she had a voice and through desperate times she continued to use it. Did you know that there are some animals that go through menopause too? In the Book Collective we get to learn more about Tarana Burke’s life in her superb memoir Unbound, the rape, sexual abuse and harassment she went through.Jinty has been in the kitchen again this week with a sweet delicious and menopause friendly treat. Jinty talks about bones and osteoporosis as we discuss world menopause day.The aging population of women are at risk of breaks from simple falls due to osteoporosis. We learn what we can do now to help improve our bones ready for old age. The Book Collective continue with Unbound by Tarana Burke – we discuss cultural and life differences and the struggle she had as she was growing up. This is a book that will definitely be re-visited throughout life, a courageous story that will change the world. We will conclude the final chapters next week. For World menopause day we wanted to make menopause matter and research how the generations of women before us were treated through their menopause. Jinty discovered a brilliant woman called Elizabeth Packard, the subject of Kate Moore’s book ‘The Woman who could not be silenced’ who was born in the 19thC and would not be silenced by her husband for having a voice and an opinion of her own. Did you know there are some animals that go through the menopause and live in a matriarchal society? Also, we learn that women in the 19thC were more likely to be put in an asylum during menopause and have to endure a hideous concoction of medicines including lead injections into their vulvas and cyanide and opium drinks? There are a lot of dark and truly mind blowing facts that we discuss this week and we thank the women who would not be silenced.A fascinating dive in to Women’s History and why now is the time to #makemenopausematter.
