Making profit when markets fall
from 🇬🇧 Stay ahead of the markets with Swissquote · host Swissquote, Ipek Ozkardeskaya, Feyyaz Alingan
You can take a long position and profit when an asset’s price rises, in the same way you can take a short bet and profit when an asset’s price falls. In this episode, I explain how shorting works, the difference between traditional short selling and trading instruments such as CFDs and futures, and why shorting is often much simpler than many people think. We also explore the risks and rewards of taking long and short positions, how leverage affects exposure, and why risk management remains essential regardless of market direction. I also discuss inverse ETFs, the role of short positions as tactical tools, and why foreign exchange markets are unique, with every trade naturally involving both a long and a short position. Listen to find out more! Ipek Ozkardeskaya has begun her financial career in 2010 in the structured products desk of the Swiss Banque Cantonale Vaudoise. She worked at HSBC Private Bank in Geneva in relation to high and ultra-high net worth clients. In 2012, she started as FX Strategist at Swissquote Bank. She worked as a Senior Market Analyst in London Capital Group in London and in Shanghai. She returned to Swissquote Bank as Senior Analyst in 2020, and launched her own website ipekScope.com in 2025.
