Malachi 3:6-12

from Podcast on The Way · host Dale Tompkins

It rarely happens all at once. Drifting from God usually looks like a series of small compromises, each one feeling manageable on its own, until one day the distance feels enormous and the path back feels unclear. Malachi 3:6-12 speaks directly into this experience, using the image of a people who were still going through the motions of worship while their hearts had quietly wandered far from God. The passage opens with a foundational truth: God does not change. Because He is constant, His people have not been destroyed despite their repeated failures, and His invitation to return remains open. He is the fixed point. His people are the ones who have moved. The specific area God addresses is the tithe, but the issue runs much deeper than money. The first fruits represented genuine trust. Giving the first portion of the harvest before knowing how the rest would turn out required real faith. By withholding it, the remnant was not just being stingy. They were clinging to control, protecting themselves from uncertainty, and in doing so, they were disrupting the very system God had designed to care for His people and honor His name. The drought and failing crops they were experiencing were not random misfortune. They were the natural consequence of a people who had stopped trusting God with what He had given them. Despite the weight of their failure, God does not leave them without hope. He promises abundance so great there will be no room to contain it, protection so complete that even the forces working against them will be rebuked, and a reputation among the nations that only He can build. These promises are not offered to a people who have already gotten their lives together. They are offered to a people being called to return. The same invitation stands today. Whatever you have been withholding, whatever you have been trying to control, whatever you have been waiting for before you take a step toward God, He has not moved. The door is open, and He is waiting.
