from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

Malawians will be heading to the polls on the 21st of May to elect a new president, plus new representatives in the county’s national assembly and local government councillors. The current president Peter Mutharika will be running again for elections and will be contending against vice president Saulos Chilima who is standing as a candidate of the United Transformation movement. The other two main contenders will be Atupele Muluzi from the United Democratic Front and representing the Malawi Congress Party will be Lazarus Chakwera. Former president Joyce Banda pulled out of running in the elections and this past weekend it was announced by the government that she is facing arrest over corrupt charges. To assist us on the environment before elections we speak to:• Enoch Chinkhunta, regional officer in Southern Malawi for the National Initiative for Civic Education. • Undule Mwakasungula, Human rights and social advocate. • Sangwani Mwafuli is the spokesperson for the electoral commission in Malawi.
