Male friendship is dying. Apparently communism might be the answer. This week on The Life Raft, Jay and Jake get into male friendship, loneliness, loyalty, getting older, why men lose their mates, and why making genuine friendships as an adult seems harder than it should be. But there’s also something else to address. On Thursday’s Antihero Broadcast, Ryan — the show’s resident communist — decided to welcome Jay into the conversation with a series of digs about him being British. "“Limey.” - Racial abuse. “Cheerio, mate." - Mocking someone's accent. If I was Indian, would this be ok? “Red coat.” - Making fun of Jay's dead ancestors. Not cool bro. Ryan regularly talks about prejudice, equality and having conversations in good faith. So today we’re asking a fairly simple question: Do those standards still apply when the person you’re insulting isn’t from your “GULAG”? There’s a bigger conversation underneath all of this. Men constantly rib on each other. Sometimes that is exactly what friendship looks like. Sometimes it crosses a line. So where actually is that line? Can men insult each other relentlessly and still be mates? Are we becoming too sensitive, or have we just become selective about which groups are allowed to be offended? Why are so many grown men losing close friends? Why do men who would do almost anything for each other barely talk? And why does making new friends as an adult seem so bloody difficult? Somewhere between male friendship, masculinity, loneliness, communism, British abuse and whatever the hell Ryan thinks he’s doing, we’re going to try to work it out. No therapy circle. No struggle session.
