Malik is 32 and lives in Hackney South and Shoreditch, one of London's most deprived constituencies. He wanted to train as a nurse to serve his community's healthcare needs, but found his path blocked by Westminster's funding decisions. Health Education England's training budgets were capped by HM Treasury, treating public investment in NHS workforce development as a cost to be minimised rather than the means by which qualified nurses reach understaffed wards. The training capacity existed, the people who wanted to fill those places existed, but the political will to fund them did not. This is Malik's story of how central government spending limits created artificial scarcity in healthcare training, leaving both aspiring healthcare workers and patients worse off. Blocked Britain is produced independently and receives no government funding.
