Malik's Story

Malik, 27, from Nuneaton in the West Midlands, wanted to train as a nurse to serve his community's healthcare needs. Despite having the qualifications and determination, he found himself blocked by a system that had workers ready but training places unfunded. Health Education England's budget constraints, imposed by HM Treasury, meant that even where capacity existed and people were willing, the political choice was made to limit investment in NHS workforce development. This is his story of how Westminster's spending decisions create artificial scarcity in healthcare training, leaving communities like Nuneaton understaffed while willing workers remain locked out.
