Mallrat Calls Out the ARIA Awards for Gender Imbalance | Music News

The 2022 ARIA Award nominations were announced last week, and Mallrat is not happy about them. "F**K the ARIAs," the Brisbane artist said on Instagram stories. "When I looked at the list of nominees this morning, my initial reaction was to feel personally underestimated and misunderstood by my album being snubbed." "Then I took a deep breath, and I realised it's not about me," continued Mallrat, real name Grace Shaw. Butterfly Blue, Mallrat's long-awaited debut album released earlier this year,  isn't in the running for any ARIA Award category, which the 24-year-old alleges is part of a wider problem. "Approximately one in five of the nominees are non-male. And in categories like heavy rock there are no non-male artists at all." [Ed. note: Ditto the jazz category] "And so I'm reminded that the Australian music industry, like many industries, is dominated by men. And in this case men who don't think an artist is credible unless it's a nonchalant dude playing guitar/rock music. F*ck you guys you don't get it." Mallrat continued: "That being said, congratulations Amyl and The Sniffers. Comfort To Me is a perfect album. You deserve the world, you're a beautiful band. Incredible live show. I hope you clean up at the [ARIA] Awards." Amyl and The Sniffers are nominated for Album of The Year, Best Group, Best Produced Album, Best Video, Best Australian Live Act, recognising their ferocious live show, and Best Rock Album (the category they won in 2019 with an unforgettable acceptance involving Agro the puppet). The band's six nominations are tied with ARIA favourite Flume, and just behind all-male electronic trio RÜFÜS DU SOL, who lead the pool with seven nominations. Thanks for listening!
