Send us a textHi!I’m Karen Hall, Host of The Hero Within Podcast.Today we reflect on our conversation with our guest Jacqueline Baird and her journey to motherhood.    If you haven't heard Part 1 and Part 2 of Jacqueline's touching story, click here to listen to her heartaches, trauma and miracles in becoming a mom.May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness month.  Women are at risk of complications from childbirth, including death and black women are nearly three times more likely to die after childbirth than white women.  Serena Williams, famous tennis pro, was almost one of them.Serena shares her story in the book, "Arrival Stories: Women Share Their Experiences of Becoming Mothers," by Amy Schumer and Christy Turlington Burns.  Serena was dismissed multiple times when requesting postnatal medical care and nearly died of a blood clot in her lungs.  She said,  "Giving birth to my baby, it turned out, was a test for how loud and how often I would have to call out before I was finally heard."We discuss the symptoms of maternal mental health conditions.Who is at risk of maternal mental health conditions?How do maternal mental health conditions impact mom, baby and the family?How do other cultures support new moms?What was your experience in being taken care of as a new or experienced mama?  How did you take care of your mental health as a mom?  I'd love to hear your thoughts!  Our guests sure value your feedback too!
