Man Shall Live by Every Word That Proceeds From The Mouth of God

In this special episode of The Kingdom Corner, Matt Geib shares a specific word from Luke 4, Matthew 4, and Deuteronomy 8 regarding man’s dependance on God and the special word that God has for you today. [00:02:20] Matt points out that, during Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness when he is tempted to turn a stone to bread, He quotes Deuteronomy 8 in response to Satan’s allure. [00:04:27] Matt breaks down the phrase “every word that proceeds from the mouth of God…”, pointing out that the entirety of “every word that proceeds…” is a single Hebrew word, “motza”, which means “to spring forth”. [00:06:50] Matt identifies that the term being utilized for “word” here in the Greek version of the Old Testament is “rhema”, and refers to, “a word of the Holy Spirit quickened to a specific purpose for a specific person in a specific situation.” It’s the same term used in Romans 10:17. [00:08:55] Alluding back to Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, Matt notes that daily God would walk and talk with Adam until he sinned. He posits that, at this point, Adam ceased to hear “ever word that proceeded from the mouth of God”. [00:10:45] Matt notes that, in his opinion, Adam’s role – had it not been corrupted by sin – would have been that of a kind of life-giving spirit. As he closes, Matt reminds us that we are created to be in the image of the “second Adam”, Jesus Christ.
