This is due to background noise that was then attempted to be dampened by an over aggressive noise gate which actually ends up drawing more attention to the sound of the audio. You are reading a script, and while some will tolerate that, I would rather hear someone just talk to me like I'm sitting across the desk. Podcasts are a time-shifted conversation with your audience.
