Manatunga – Künstlerische Interventionen von George Nuku Auf Einladung des Ethnologischen Museums hat der Bildhauer George Nuku drei Interventionen für die Ozeanien-Ausstellungsflächen im Humboldt Forum entwickelt. Er nimmt die Thematik der Ausstellungsräume und die dort gezeigten Ausstellungsstücke auf und setzt die historischen Werke aus den Sammlungen des Ethnologischen Museums durch seine zeitgenössischen Kunstwerke aus Plexiglas und Plastik in eine neue Perspektive. Gemeinsam mit Dorothea Deterts, der Kuratorin für die Sammlungen aus Ozeanien, hat George mit uns im Studio über seine Arbeit für die Interventionen gesprochen: Was es für ihn heißt, Künstler zu sein; die Workshops mit Freiwilligen; Meerestiere aus Plastikflaschen. Gesprächspartner*innen: George Nuku (* 1964 in Omahu, Aotearoa, Neuseeland) ist ein hoch angesehener und international bekannter Māori-Künstler, der mit Stein, Knochen, Holz, Muschel, Styropor und Plexiglas arbeitet. Seine Werke reichen von zarten Jade- und Perlenamuletten bis hin zu lebensgroßen Skulpturen aus Stein und Plexiglas, wobei er traditionelle Elemente der Maori-Kultur verwendet. Manatunga – artistic interventions by George Nuku At the invitation of the Ethnologisches Museum, the sculptor George Nuku has developed three interventions for the Oceania exhibition areas in the Humboldt Forum. He takes up the themes of the exhibition spaces and the exhibits on display there and puts the historical works from the Ethnologisches Museum’s collections into a new perspective with his contemporary works of art made of Plexiglas and plastic. Together with Dorothea Deterts, the curator for the collections from Oceania, George spoke to us in the studio about his work for the interventions: what it means to him to be an artist, the workshops with volunteers, sea creatures made from plastic bottles. Interviewees: George Nuku (* 1964 in Omahu, Aotearoa, New Zealand) is a highly regarded and internationally known Māori artist working in stone, bone, wood, shell, polystyrene, and plexiglass. His works range from delicate jade and pearl amulets to life-size stone and plexiglass sculptures in which he uses traditional elements of Māori culture.
