Mandela Day (OB)

The Rock Five-One Day Care centre based in Midrand is a humble but dilapidated dwelling which cares for 52 senior citizens and 45 children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years of age. Founded in 2004, this NPO provides the children and seniors with daily meals and prepares the toddlers for their first years of schooling. Elders are kept busy with beadwork, knitting, sowing and physical exercises during the week. In Partnership with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, Channel Africa worked with the community and sponsors to refurbish the food gardens, clean, paint, and revamp the centre as part of the 67 minutes of Mandela Day initiative. Channel will also be a media partner at this event.
