Manor System

In this episode, we explore the Manor System and its central role in the social and economic life of medieval Europe. We examine how manors functioned as largely self-sufficient agricultural communities, where landowners provided protection and access to farmland while serfs and peasants supplied the labor needed to sustain the estate. Closely connected to the broader feudal hierarchy, the manorial system helped create local stability after the decline of centralized Roman authority, but it also reinforced a rigid social structure that limited mobility. We also consider how the growth of trade, market economies, and new political institutions gradually contributed to the system’s decline.
