Mapping Dreams

from Waywords Studio Full Slate

How do we navigate the space between the curated tourism experience and the raw concrete of the world beneath it? We investigate the “imaginative geographies” we project onto other lands, examining how Italo Calvino’s semiotic cities, Arthur Conan Doyle’s romanticized London, and Mathieu Kassovitz’s brutalist Paris reveal the ethical tensions of the traveler’s gaze. We look into our habit of cropping out infrastructure and ask whether reading the raw city makes us better travelers or something worse. Bloomsday in Dublin and Iain Sinclair’s London Orbital are also considered. Resources: Calvino, Italo. Invisible Cities, 1974. Doyle, Arthur Conan. “A Study in Scarlet,” 1930. Harvey, David. The Condition of Postmodernity: An Enquiry into the Origins of Cultural Change, 1989. Joyce, James. Ulysses, 1922. Kassovitz, Mathieu, director. La Haine, 1995. Said, Edward W. Orientalism, 1978. Sinclair, Iain, and Chris Petit, directors. London Orbital, 2002. Sinclair, Iain. London Orbital: A Walk Around the M25, 2002. Episode 7.07 – Mapping Dreams Glossary Imaginative Geography: The thought process, according to Edward Said, where we build a mental conception of a foreign landscape through literature, art, and personal or cultural desire long before we physically arrive, pre-determining and replacing the actual physical geography with a commodified myth. See Edward Said’s Orientalism, 1978. Staged Authenticity: The socio-spatial phenomenon where tourism operators construct aesthetically controlled “front stages” (such as curated landmarks or replica villages) to satisfy the consumer/tourist’s desire for an authentic encounter, even while actively concealing the “back-stage” realities of local labor, economic extraction, and physical infrastructure. Listener’s Guide Reflection Questions When you crop a travel photograph to remove a power line, parking lot, or trash can, what reality are you trying to erase? How does Sherlock Holmes’s cocaine addiction or Leopold Bloom’s alienation ruin the versions of London and Dublin sold by tourism? How has Edward Said’s “imaginative geography” worked on your travel expectations in the past? Do you watch fictional films or read books about urban decay or poverty? For what reasons? Which of the two Calvino cities featured most resonate with you, Tamara or Zaira? Why? The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene (Full Audiobook) Robert Greene Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control – from the author of The Laws of Human Nature. In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in t Tao Te Ching by Laozi (Author), Stephen Mitchell (Full Audiobook) Laozi Lao-tzu's Tao Te Ching, or Book of the Way, is the classic manual on the art of living, and one of the wonders of the world. In eighty-one brief chapters, the Tao Te Ching looks at the basic predicament of being alive and gives advice that imparts balance and perspective, a serene and generous spirit. This book is about wisdom in action. It teaches how to work for the good with the effortless skill that comes from being in accord with the Tao (the basic principle of the universe) and applies equally to good government and sexual love; to child rearing, business, and ecology. Stephen Mitchell's bestselling version has been widely acclaimed as a gift to contemporary culture. The Truth In This Art Rob Lee The Truth In This Art with Rob Lee is a Baltimore-based arts and culture podcast where independent journalist Rob Lee goes beyond the highlight reel to uncover the truth behind the work—the creative process, the choices, and the stories that shape the people who make it. Each episode explores how artists build sustainable practices, stay connected to their communities, and create work that reflects the world around them.
