Mapping the Cosmic Void: Finding the Universe's Missing Matter

For decades, astronomers have struggled to locate missing baryonic matter, as the visible mass in stars and galaxies accounts for only a small fraction of what existed after the Big Bang. In a 2026 study, researchers from the CHIME/FRB Collaboration successfully mapped this elusive ordinary matter by analyzing the "smearing" of fast radio bursts as they travel through space. These ultra-bright flashes of radio waves act as cosmic probes, slowing down as they encounter diffuse gas clouds located far beyond the boundaries of known galaxies.
