Marcel Petiot: French Serial Killer Who Murdered Jews Under Nazi Occupation

from World History: True Stories of the 20th Century · host World History

Marcel Petiot, a French serial killer posing as a resistance helper, used Nazi-occupied France to lure victims and murder them under the guise of escape. Marcel Petiot remains one of the most disturbing figures to emerge from France’s wartime history—a man who used the chaos of occupation, the trust of frightened civilians, and the secrecy of resistance networks to commit a series of murders that shocked the nation. Born in 1897 in Auxerre, Petiot grew up displaying troubling behavior, including theft, manipulation, and a pattern of evading responsibility through psychiatric defenses. After World War I, he reinvented himself as a doctor and later as a local politician, cultivating a respectable façade while repeatedly engaging in fraud and misconduct. When Germany occupied France in 1940, Petiot saw an opportunity for greater deception. Under the alias “Dr Eugène,” he created a false escape network that claimed to help Jews, resisters, and fugitives flee to South America. In reality, clients who arrived at his Paris residence at 21 Rue Le Sueur were murdered—victims poisoned under the pretense of medical injections. Petiot stole their valuables and destroyed the bodies using quicklime, fire, and makeshift cremation methods. For months, rumors circulated about a mysterious resistance pipeline, but when foul-smelling smoke poured from Petiot’s townhouse in March 1944, investigators discovered human remains belonging to at least 23 victims, along with trunks full of stolen possessions. Petiot fled, assumed a new identity, and briefly joined a resistance group before being captured later that year. His 1946 trial captivated France. Petiot claimed he was a heroic resistance executioner, but prosecutors exposed his lies. Convicted of 26 murders, he was executed by guillotine on 25 May 1946. His case remains a chilling example of how war can conceal not only heroism, but monstrous deception. This episode is part of the series Serial Killers of the 20th Century.Watch the full documentary and explore hundreds of historical films at:WorldHistory.tv
