On March 15, 1917, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the Russian throne after moderate conservatives convinced him that stepping down would save Russia from revolution and keep the country in World War I. Instead, his abdication destroyed the government they were trying to preserve and opened the door to Bolshevik takeover.
