In his post-resurrection appearance to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, Jesus “explained from the Scriptures” all about his crucifixion and resurrection. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul suggests the gospel message was “just as the Scriptures said.” So what, exactly, do the Scriptures say which would lead Jesus’ followers to subsequently understand the resurrection? And how do these prophecies, traditions, and narratives fit in with other cultural assumptions of life after death in the ancient world? In this sermon we will explore why the idea of the son of God dying and rising again was “a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles” (1 Cor. 1:23, NRSV) and yet why it is the greatest source of hope and joy we can have as his followers.
