Sumner gathered around the piano, singing gospel songs together. Also, in 1959, Colonel Parker orchestrated a telegram from Elvis to his Memphis office regarding his impending discharge from the army. In the message, Elvis humbly requested a simple return home, without ceremony, stating that he wished to come back the same way any other serviceman would, honoring his military service as any other man would, and showing his appreciation for the fans’ support.
