A Piano Bitten by Thomas Edison A piano can make beautiful music. But if you can't hear, how do you enjoy that music? Thomas Edison was a famous inventor (發明者). He invented some of the things that we use every day. He made a better light bulb. He made a phonograph, which could record sounds and play it back. And he made a motion picture machine, which made very short movies. But Edison also faced many challenges. He lost almost all his hearing when he was 12 years old. But he was not discouraged (灰心). He believed this helped him focus on his work. And he also found a way to enjoy piano music. Edison would lean in (靠近) close to the piano. And he would BITE the piano! By pressing his teeth into the wood of the piano, he could feel vibrations in his skull. 當有人彈奏時,愛迪生會用牙齒咬住琴鍵正上方的木頭,感受音樂的震動。 Edison called it "hearing through my teeth". And recently, a man in the U.S. bought a piano that may have Edison's teeth marks on it! Robert Friedman collects old pianos. Last year, he bought a black piano that was owned by Edison. And on the wood just above the piano keys, there are some shallow marks (淺的痕跡). Robert hopes the piano can be put somewhere, so everyone can see it. ________________________________ 埃及的另類金字塔 A New Kind of Pyramid in Egypt Egypt is known for its big pyramids. The pyramids were built thousands of years ago, to remember their kings, also known as pharaohs (法老王(古埃及國王)). Today, a new kind of pyramid can now be found in Egypt's Western Desert. This new pyramid wasn't built to honor (尊敬) any king. It was built to spotlight (使公眾注意) plastic pollution. The new pyramid took five days to build. It weighs 20 tonnes (公噸). It is taller than a three-story building. 這個塑膠瓶做的金字塔有三層樓高。 And it was made with one million plastic bottles! All of the bottles were collected from the Nile River (尼羅河) which is found in Egypt. One of the people that helped build the pyramid says it shows how serious the problem of plastic pollution is. The plastic pyramid was built in Egypt because the world's presidents and prime ministers are there to talk about climate change. That meeting is called COP27. The pyramid's builders are hoping their special project shows world leaders how important it is to deal with the climate crisis. ________________________________ So, in today's News Bites: Students from Taipei First Girls High School are going to the Rose Parade in Los Angeles. 135 students and teachers from the school will fly to L.A. on December 27th.
