Margarete Mitscherlich-Nielsen, geb. 1917 in Dänemark, war Psychoanalytikerin, Medizinerin und Autorin zahlreicher Bücher. Die Tochter eines dänischen Arztes und einer deutschen Lehrerin studierte Medizin und Literatur in München und Heidelberg und wurde 1950 in Tübingen zum Dr. med. promoviert. 1947 traf sie in der Schweiz den Arzt und Psychoanalytiker Alexander Mitscherlich, den sie 1955 heiratete. Gemeinsam bemühten sie sich nach dem Krieg um die Wiederbelebung der Psychoanalyse in Deutschland. 1960 war sie Mitbegründerin des Sigmund-Freud-Instituts in Frankfurt, wo sie fortan vorrangig arbeitete, und fungierte viele Jahre als Herausgeberin der Zeitschrift "Psyche".
