Judith Pinedo, conocida como Mariamulata, un ave representativa del Caribe colombiano, llegó a la Alcaldía de Cartagena en el año 2008, por medio de la recolección de firmas, rechazando el aval del Partido Liberal y derrotando a los políticos tradicionales de la región, lo que hizo que fuera objeto de una persecución judicial por la que estuvo dos años en la cárcel, hasta que la Corte Suprema de Justicia la declarara inocente en un proceso por la venta de un lote baldío.
