In which the author sets forth his intention to relate a tale of historical import concerning the brutal massacre of a Boer general and his followers by the fearsome Zulu king Dingaan, professing a faithful adherence to recorded events. He also introduces the grim narrative of the Boer trekkers who perished in the fever-stricken veld near Delagoa Bay, touching upon the suspicions held by some against English interference in these tragic affairs.
