Marikana Remembered

Forty-four people in total were killed on the 16th of August 2012 at Lonmin’s Marikana operations in what has now been known as the ‘Marikana Massacre’. The Farlam report which was released by government in June 2015 rejected the police’s explanation for the deaths but as yet, no full account has been provided of what actually happened at the second scene. However, according to a new Marikana report released by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) striking mine workers did not attack police at “the small koppie”, despite police testimony of protesters having shot at them.
