Marina Baginsky Lowe: Building bridges and finding common ground, saying yes, and stepping outside comfort zone

from Beautiful Shifts · host Lindsay & Shantil

Marina joins us today to share about multiple transitions in her life including living abroad at various times, going to law school, finding herself without both parents at the age of 40, working many years for the ACLU and recently moving to Equality Utah. She shares about advocating for legislation and policy in Utah working to build bridges across party lines, and explains about a recent bill she was involved in passing. We loved her perspective on listening to understand and finding common ground. She shares about many places she has lived and her thoughts on stepping outside of our comfort zones and taking advantage of opportunities.    Marina is a wife and mother of two daughters, ages 12 and 14. She is an advocate and lobbyist focused on civil liberties issues, currently representing Equality Utah as well as other nonprofits on issues such as LGBT rights and reproductive freedom. Over the years she has successfully drafted and passed numerous bills in the Utah State Legislature on topics from bail and policing reform to prison and jail conditions to strengthening 4th amendment protections in the face of new and emerging technologies. Marina was born in Oxford, England, grew up in Northern California, and before graduating from the University of California Hastings College of the Law, spent two years working in marketing at Hewlett-Packard in Grenoble, France.   Marina was so much fun to talk with and we loved hearing about her unique experiences and perspective and learning about the impactful work she is doing. Wherever Life Takes Us whereverlifetakesuss Join three best friend as they explore this beautiful world! Half Ties kwamenabrace Half-ties is a conversation series on the funny, beautiful and sometimes challenging moments that interracial couples experience being with somebody who’s culturally different from them.Hosted by creative couple Olivia & Kwamena, we listen to stories about growing up with racism and prejudice; falling in love and meeting the in-laws; navigating difficult conversations within the family and in society, and how these couples make their relationship work and what they actively choose to pass down to the next generation. C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle St. Philip's Church: Charleston, SC Come join us on Wednesday nights as we explore the riches of C.S. Lewis’s marvelous book The Last Battle, which is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia. It is a remarkable book on multiple levels and was awarded the Carnegie Medal back in the 1950s when it was first published. The Last Battle has some themes in common with The Great Divorce and That Hideous Strength that will make it an excellent follow-up to those two books, and like them, it has some remarkable resonance with things going on in today’s culture. It is a book that is both theologically rich and poignantly beautiful in its writing, and it can help equip us to live boldly for Christ in a culture that has lost its way. (Although this book is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia, it can stand on its own and it is not necessary to have read the other books for this class.)
