Marines Honored for Abbey Gate Valor | US News

War Secretary Pete Hegseth honored three Marines with Bronze Star Medals for their heroic actions during the deadly Abbey Gate bombing in Kabul five years ago, a moment that claimed 13 U.S. lives and over 170 Afghan civilians. In a powerful ceremony on the anniversary, Hegseth called their courage “lion-like,” condemning past bureaucratic delays and downgraded awards as failures of leadership. He framed their sacrifice as proof that true strength lies in trust between government and troops — warriors who stood firm in a suicide-bomb blast zone, knowing their duty to comrades and civilians. The review into Afghanistan’s withdrawal is set to conclude by year’s end, keeping this pivotal moment under national scrutiny.
