Mark 12:13-17 – Don’t Mess With Taxes

from Calvary Hanford Podcast

Welcome back to our verse by verse Bible study through the New Testament Gospel of Mark. In this message, titled Don’t Mess With Taxes, we look at Mark 12:13-17, where the religious leaders try to trap Jesus with a politically charged question about civic duty and Roman authority. The Pharisees and Herodians pull out flattery, asking whether it is lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not. They thought they had Him cornered. If Jesus says yes, the Jewish crowd who hates Roman oppression will turn on Him. If He says no, the Roman authorities will arrest Him for rebellion. It seemed like a no-win scenario. Jesus responds by asking for a denarius. He asks whose image and inscription are on the coin. When they reply, Caesar’s, He delivers a profound truth wrapped in everyday reality: render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. This study reminds us that government authority is real, and as believers, we are called to be good citizens. Unless the state commands us to explicitly disobey God’s Word, we fulfill our civil duties, pay our taxes, and submit to the authorities God has placed over us. But the deeper point of this teaching centers on ownership. The coin bore the image of the emperor, so it belonged to his system. You bear the image of the Creator, so your entire life belongs to Him. We owe the government our taxes, but we owe God our absolute allegiance, our hearts, and our worship. If you are searching for verse by verse teaching that sticks to the text of Scripture, this study will encourage your faith. We look at the context of first century Israel, the true identity of Jesus Christ, and how these ancient verses apply directly to our modern lives as followers of God.
