Mark Begich: former US Senator, Anchorage Mayor, and Anchorage Assembly member

Send us Fan MailFormer US Senator Mark Begich was born in Anchorage in 1962 to, at the time, Alaska State Senator Nick Begich who would go on to become US House Representative in 1970 and whose plane would disappear in 1972. Mark opened the Mother Lode night club when he was 16, was appointed to the youth commission by Mayor George Sullivan in 1980 and served in Mayor Tony Knowles' administration, all that before being elected to the Anchorage Assembly at age 26 -- the youngest ever to serve on that body. He was sworn in as mayor of Anchorage on July 1, 2003, and elected to the US Senate in 2008 defeating Senator Ted Stevens. He served just one term before being defeated by Sen.
