Mark Horak’s Life-Saving Rescue | Spokane News

A 67-year-old man, Mark Horak, returned to thank the firefighters who saved his life after a harrowing accident in September 2026—when he fell and was impaled by a fence post. The initial 911 call was vague, but the Spokane Valley Fire Department raced to the scene, stabilized him, and used specialized gear to free him. His wife didn’t realize the severity until she heard him calling for help. He endured 16 days in the hospital and three surgeries, losing part of his stomach and altering his eating habits—but he’s now walking four miles daily and eagerly looking forward to golf again. To show his gratitude, he brought treats and drinks to the station, shaking hands with every firefighter—proof that even the most chaotic rescues can end in recovery and heartfelt thanks.
