Mark McEwen: After the Stroke

from Fiercely Human

Why Mark is Fiercely Human: You may remember Mark as CBS journalist and popular news personality. He was a mainstay on the CBS network; from 48 hours to CBS this morning. I grew up watching Mark on TV and can totally relate to the rest of the country when he was named one of the "Ten Most Trusted News Personalities." He has interviewed five presidents, Steven Spielberg, major movie stars like Sidney Poitier and Julia Roberts, cultural icons like Muhammad Ali and musicians like Stevie Wonder and Garth Brooks and has covered the Oscars, to the Olympics to the Grammys and more. Mark has had quite the career and was a constant presence in my home growing up. I met Mark at TedX Broadway a few years back when we were both speakers, and it wasn't until then that I learned more about Mark's story. In 2005, Mark suffered a massive stroke which almost ended his life and shifted the trajectory of his career, relationships, and perspective on life. He wrote a book, "After the Stroke" chronicling the near-deadly experience and his long road to recovery. Now, Mark tours the country speaking on his personal journey and serving as an inspiration for stroke victims while spreading awareness of the warning signs of stroke. Here is what we cover in the episode: ● Mark's unexpected and synchronistic journey from comic, to a weatherman, to prominent national news personality. ● His experience having a massive stroke 30,000 feet in the air and the angel who saved his life before walking back into baggage claim. ● The mantras Mark held tight to when faced with incredible adversity. ● How Mark turned his pain into his purpose. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”).
