Mark Withee: Lieutenant Colonel and Weather Reconnaissance Squadron navigator explains what to expect from this 'hurricane season'
from The Sunday Session with Francesca Rudkin · host Newstalk ZB
The US has entered peak 'hurricane season', with a high percentage of tropical cyclones set to hit the nation in the coming weeks. Hurricane Idalia has torn its way through Florida, and The National Hurricane Centre is monitoring at least 4 other named storms. Lieutenant Colonel Mark Withee, a Weather Reconnaissance Squadron navigator, says each hurricane season is different, with some years being busier than others. "The hurricane season starts on June 1, but it typically doesn't ramp up until late August/early September. 2021 was an exceptionally busy year, the season kicked off early in mid-May."
