Markets, Mortgage Rates and a Growing Republican Midterm Crisis

Markets are flashing warning signs, mortgage rates are rising, and Republicans are staring at an increasingly difficult Senate map.   I break down four developments that could shape the economy and the 2026 midterms. I start with renewed instability in the Middle East, concerns about Federal Reserve interest-rate policy, and the troubling fundamentals beneath Wall Street's recent performance. Higher borrowing costs, government spending, tariffs, and geopolitical instability are putting additional pressure on American homebuyers. I also examine the Republican fight over campaign resources. President Trump has a substantial political war chest, but Senate Republicans must decide how much they can afford to spend defending Ken Paxton in Texas while competing in Michigan, Maine, Alaska, Ohio, Iowa, North Carolina, and Georgia. Finally, I look at the controversy surrounding Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, including deleted social media posts discussed in CBS News reporting cited during the show.
