What’s your gut reaction to the word submission? Probably not warm, cozy feelings. And authority doesn’t usually land much better. Even when we understand the biblical concepts behind them, something in us instinctively resists the idea of giving up power—especially power over our own lives. Voluntary submission feels manageable because we can “unsubmit” whenever we want, but mandatory submission—especially when it clashes with our personal agenda—creates fear. That fear fuels anxiety about leadership, skepticism toward institutions, and even resistance toward Jesus Himself. Our instinct is to recoil from authority, and that quiet resistance can become its own kind of bondage. In today’s passage, Jesus confronts this tension head on. He shows us that true freedom isn’t found in resisting authority, but in submitting to the One who is perfectly trustworthy.
