The Lord’s Table is one of the most important Christian traditions, yet many believers approach it with rigid preferences about the bread, the method, or the order—so much so that the meaning can get lost and a sacred moment becomes an empty ritual. Others participate simply because they’re “supposed to,” without grasping the story behind it. But Jesus had a clear purpose when He instituted this meal. He replaced the old Passover with a new one, and at the heart of it are two essential ingredients: remembrance and hope. When we recover those, communion becomes powerful again, rooting us in what Christ has done and anchoring us in what He has promised to do.
