REVIEW: THE CONDITION OF A HUSBAND - He is the head, as Christ is the head. 1 Corinthians 11:3/Ephesians 5:24 THE COMMANDS FOR HUSBANDS - Ephesians 5:25-33 - Love your wife as Christ loved the church – Sacrificial, Sanctifying, Indivisible, providing, prizing - Colossians 3:19 - Love your wife, and do not be harsh with her. - 1 Peter 3:7 – In knowledge/understanding/consideration, showing her honor, as created, knowing her value as Christ’s, knowing the consequence of sinful neglect of God’s commands. THE CONDUCT OF A WIFE - Love your husband and children, self-control, pure, kind, working at home and submissive to her OWN husband. THE COMMANDS FOR WIVES - Ephesians 5:22-24 Submit to your OWN husband as to the Lord…As the church submits to Christ… - Colossians 3:18 Submit to your husband… as is fitting in the Lord - THE MEANING OF MARRIAGE, AND THE MEANS OF REFLECTION… Ephesians 5:31–33 (ESV) — 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. 1 Peter Context - Ch.1 A Living Hope In Christ: For eternity (v3-5) In trials (v6-9) According to God’s plan (v10-12) In holiness (v13-25) Ch.2 Holiness in Christ: Sanctification & Submission In repentance and dependance on the trustworthy word (v1-10) In submission and suffering before the world, under Christ’s Shepherding (v11-25) Ch.3 Holiness in Christ: Submission & Suffering In Marriage (3:1-7) In unity for all the Church, suffering in Christ (3:8-22) Ch.4 Holiness in Christ: Suffering, Serving, Sharing In suffering for sanctification, amid slander (4:1-8) In serious service for Christ’s glory (4:7-11) In sharing Christ’s sufferings (4:12-19) Ch.5 Holiness in Christ: Humility, Sobriety, Hope In humility under the holiness of God (v1-7) In sobriety because our adversary (v8-9) In hope because God’s grace, plan and power!(v10-11) 1 Peter 3: Your Manner Of Life In A Sinful World Because Of Your Suffering Savior Likewise Wives… - Subject to your OWN Husbands - Even if some don’t obey the word they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wife. o Her conduct (v2) § Respectful and pure o Her adorning (v3) § Not External, outward superficial § Inward hidden: gentle and quite spirit which is imperishable and precious to God - Set apart like Sarah who hoped in God o Sarah didn’t function in perfection but she functioned by faith in God § Hebrews 11:11 (ESV) — 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. - do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
