Tegen Juventus, in de bekerfinale, raakte hij dusdanig geblesseerd dat hij de EL-finale moest toekijken vanaf de bank en bondscoach Ronald Koeman moest opbellen om af te zeggen voor het EK. Atalanta won de Europa League-finale verrassend, maar “het niet spelen zal de grootste smet op mijn carrière zijn”, aldus Marten.
