In which a gentle young architect-in-training cultivates a steadfast friendship with a meek and modest companion, and their quiet walks and convivial dinners reveal much about the characters surrounding them, including one of peculiar and unsettling moral composition. The closing scene sees a storm of reproach and expulsion, as the sheltered refuge of a Pecksniffian home is abruptly withdrawn, propelling a resolute departure into the wide, uncertain world beyond.
