In which we find Mr Mould enjoying a quiet afternoon surrounded by his family and the sombre trappings of his trade, whilst the indomitable Mrs Gamp prepares herself to undertake the nightly care of a very ill gentleman, bringing to light the peculiarities and routines of a sick chamber. Amid the shadows and silences of the night, her reflections, ambitions, and the patient’s restless murmurs unfold with a mixture of humour, fatigue, and an air of melancholic duty.
