Martin McGarry on Black Hat Balance, WordPress Exploits and Perspective as Currency in AI Search

from The Unscripted SEO Interview Podcast · host Jeremy Rivera

Martin McGarry spent his first years in SEO building WordPress sites and hacking links, went clean about ten years ago, and now runs Search Assistance as a freelance consultant in the UK. His case is simple: SEO still boils down to words and links, and the one thing AI cannot reproduce is your perspective on the product you sell. This was Martin's first real podcast. He has done some kind of SEO for 20 years, works mostly with small businesses near him, has picked up healthcare clients in the States, and does a lot of work in iGaming, which is where most of the black hat he complains about on Bluesky lives. Full transcript and recap: https://unscriptedseo.com/martin-mcgarry/ Jeremy ties Martin's read on the Helpful Content Update to Jason Barnard's entity work and to the canonical-redirect abuse Timothy Malmros laid out on an earlier episode. Both of them land in the same place: brand, trust and real authority are what get you into Google and into the LLMs that wrap it. In this episode WordPress's flexibility is its curse. Disable Comments goes on first, automated taxonomies get switched off, and RevSlider was the exploit every small client walked in with. The Helpful Content Update was not about content. Martin's read is that Google profiled whole sites through the entity and knowledge graph, and scaled WordPress sites on the same themes were the pattern that vanished. Words and links, still. What changed is the measurement, from lots of both to quality of both, and the entry threshold Google once held open for everybody. Why iGaming is swamped. Offshore illegal operators that Google has left to the algorithm, and why a pharma SERP would never be allowed to look like that. Telegram link sellers and Google's grace period. A spam page ranks for two or three days, gets tanked, and ten more are waiting, while the sites that were already ranking get reassessed. The door-manufacturer sludge. Jeremy's client SERP was hit with 10 to 20 new junk domains a month, and a weekly disavow is what brought rankings back. Perspective is your currency in AI search. AI can pull the facts instantly. Who buys a flip-flop for the rain is the kind of human perspective it cannot reproduce. Top tip: ask the raw API. Hit the OpenAI or Gemini API from a terminal, see the junk that comes back, and understand why SEO is not dead. Then Martin's bet on RSS feeds as the next llms.txt.
