Martyrdom in Judaism

EMOR Dying just because you are a Jew, sanctifying G-d’s name. Dying rather than violating a cardinal sin; or in some circumstances even, any sin. It may be obvious why dying for one’s cause is noble, even sacred. But in Judaism, a religion that hallows and celebrates life above all, it seems quite peculiar. We know that Torah’s injunction that the mitzvos are for us to ‘live by’, and not die for, as the sages explain; so where does martyrdom fit in all this? The Jew is a living manifestation of the Divine. All our actions are to glorify the Divine as the sole and absolute reality. And since the value of a thing is determined according to the price paid for it, those who sacrifice themselves pay the highest price, elevating the sanctity of Hashem’s Name as a unique truth. Their courage and strength of spirit are the foundation upon which our nation stands. They are the pillars of fire and torches of the way, infusing the sanctity of the Divine and elevating us above and beyond the apathy of routine.
